1. WHO SHOULD USE CONNEXSTAR?
Connexstar by Spacenet is designed for multi-location businesses in the continental U.S. and/or Canada. This includes retail, restaurant and hospitality chains, as well as franchise owners. It is not available to consumer or small-office/home-office users. Additionally, Connexstar is not designed for providing ISP services or for hosting Web sites.

2. WHERE IS CONNEXSTAR AVAILABLE?
Because Spacenet’s Connexstar service is delivered by satellite, it’s available everywhere in the continental United States, today – anywhere you can get a clear view of the southern sky. Connexstar is also available at a slight premium to businesses in Canada and certain parts of the Caribbean. Contact us to learn more about availabilities in these areas.

3. HOW FAST IS CONNEXSTAR?
Connexstar is comparable in performance to most widely deployed terrestrial broadband offerings, with downstream data rates peaking at 500 Kbps. The upstream is similarly engineered to provide an optimal user experience for Web-based and e-mail applications. And, unlike competing satellite and wireline technologies, the Connexstar infrastructure is not shared with any consumer broadband offering. Connexstar plans to introduce service plans featuring downstream speeds of 1 Mbps and higher in the coming months; when these services are introduced, no customer premise equipment upgrades will be required to take advantage of them.

4. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY “COMMERCIAL-GRADE” SERVICE?
Home Internet users may be able to wait for a maintenance call, live with fluctuating service levels, or deal with limited options for growth, but chances are that your business cannot. Connexstar’s parent company, Spacenet Inc., has been providing broadband networking services for some of America’s largest enterprises – including Sears, Holiday Inn, Goodyear and the U.S. Postal Service, among others – for many years. As you can imagine, these clients have rigorous standards for in-field maintenance, installation and integrity of service, for which Spacenet has developed a wide array of QOS tools and system management best practices. With Connexstar, we are deploying these same resources on behalf of customers with substantially fewer remote sites. So, with Connexstar, you’re not just getting a consumer-grade network at a business-grade price. You’re getting the same level of attention, support and service we provide for our largest clients, at an affordable price.

5. WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY THAT CONNEXSTAR SERVICE IS SCALABLE TO A PRIVATE WAN?
The 360E satellite system that powers Connexstar is the same system that is used by Spacenet’s custom network clients. Therefore, should your business grow to a point where a customized satellite network is justified, the transition such a network would not require new equipment at your remote sites. In addition, because Connexstar uses private satellite capacity that is exclusively dedicated to Spacenet business customers, Spacenet has complete end-to-end control of all aspects of the network. Should your business grow to the size that it requires a completely private, dedicated network, Spacenet can easily transition your network to a fully private, custom WAN to serve your needs.

6. WHAT KIND OF APPLICATIONS CAN I RUN?
Connexstar is designed to support most IP and Web-based applications. Note that Connexstar is an IP platform only – no legacy protocols are supported.

7. CAN I HAVE A BACKHAUL TO MY CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS OR DATA CENTER?
Connexstar customers have the option of adding a secure Internet backhaul from Spacenet’s hub facility to their corporate headquarters or data center. Additional charges will apply. Contact a Connexstar sales representative for more details and pricing.

8. HOW DO I PLACE AN ORDER FOR CONNEXSTAR?
To place an order for Connexstar service, simply submit an online contact form or call 703-245-5400. A Connexstar sales representative will work with you to complete your order.

9. WHAT MAINTENANCE OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE WITH CONNEXSTAR?
Basic Connexstar service includes depot maintenance, which covers next-day replacement and shipping of the indoor satellite modem. Additional charges apply if on-site maintenance visits are required. For an additional monthly charge, Connexstar users may also select next business day or same business day on-site maintenance options. Next business day maintenance includes on-site equipment repair and/or equipment replacement within the next business day. Same business day maintenance includes on-site equipment repair and/or equipment replacement within a six-hour response time on the same business day. Service requests made late in the business day may be dispatched on following business day. Contact a Connexstar sales representative for more details and pricing.

10. WHAT EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED WITH CONNEXSTAR?
Connexstar equipment consists of a 24x36-inch satellite dish and associated electronics, and a small indoor satellite modem. The dish is connected to the modem by two coaxial cables. The modem connects to a standard PC using CAT5 Ethernet cable. Other optional services, such as TV, music and credit authorization, may require additional hardware and cabling.

12. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A BASIC CONNEXSTAR INSTALLATION?
A basic Connexstar installation includes all indoor and outdoor satellite equipment with a fixed wall, canopy or non-penetrating roof mount, 250 feet of coaxial cable, six feet of CAT5 Ethernet cable, and connection to one PC. Additional charges apply for out-of-scope requirements.

13. DOES CONNEXSTAR REQUIRE A TELEPHONE CONNECTION?
No. Connexstar uses Spacenet’s field-proven two-way satellite technology that has long served the business needs of many of America’s leading retailers. It is completely independent of terrestrial wires and does not require a telephone connection. All data is transmitted and received over satellite.

14. WHAT SATELLITE DOES CONNEXSTAR SERVICE USE?
Spacenet is not an owner or operator of satellite capacity. Instead, for both its custom network and Connexstar customers, Spacenet uses satellite capacity from a number of satellite operators on a variety of satellites.

15. CAN I USE MY EXISTING SATELLITE DISH AND OTHER EQUIPMENT TO RECEIVE CONNEXSTAR SERVICE?
No. Connexstar by Spacenet uses proprietary satellite equipment that is specifically designed for the Connexstar service. Existing satellite television or satellite Internet systems, including StarBand systems, cannot be used to receive Connexstar service.
